Reading exercise – Privilege and power

Racial Equity tools defines privilege as “Unearned social power accorded by the formal and informal institutions of society to ALL members of a dominant group (e.g. white privilege, male privilege, etc.).”

When considering privilege, it is important to think about what this means in terms of power.

This extract speaks to the US context but has global relevance. Spend 5 minutes recording any reflections in your notes, considering the following prompts:

  • Where do you hold power in your work? Where do you not?
  • Thinking about your museum work, what is your relationship to power? Think about this in terms of personal power and institutional power.
