Undertaking a skills assessment of community members can be part of asset based community development showcasing what the community brings to the project and what the community may need from the project, this is explored in Supporting Community Partners.
To develop your ability to carry out a skills assessment look at the team you work with or perhaps your family and identify what skills they have.
You can do this by having an informal conversation about wants and needs – the following questions can act as prompts:
- What do you enjoy doing?
- What do you think you are good at?
- Do you have x skill?
You can also adopt a desk-based approach, where individuals reflect on what skills they bring in general or on relation to a pre-determined list.
This exercise should take about 60 minutes.
Please record your findings on the downloadable template.
