Working with Collections Introduction

Working with Collections is one of a number of courses that sits within the new Museum Essentials Programme.  This course is divided into 24 lessons grouped under the following headings:

1. Introduction to Working with Collections

2. Dynamic Collections Practice

3. Contemporary Collecting

4. Interpretation and Use

5. Change Making

Working with Collections aims to help you think about your professional practice.  Collections work is vital and our collections underpin all aspects of museums.

At the beginning of each section we will share the learning objectives and ask you to reflect on what you currently know, why it is important and how it relates to your professional practice. We will then ask you to reflect on what you want to learn from this section – developing your own learning objectives.

Your learning is further supported by different exercises along the way grouped under the four headings:

Reflecting – exercises associated with thinking about your own professional practice, organisational practice and sector practice, and assessing your knowledge and experience to consolidate your learning.

Doing – exercises associated with action, reading case studies, reports, standards, books, articles and papers, observing role models and watching films or animations

Connecting – exercises associated with making connections with others – specialist groups, colleagues within the organisation/ sector; others outside etc, also perhaps with other learners.

Reading – exercises associated with reading case studies, reports, standards, books, articles and papers.

We hope by providing a blend of information, exercises and signposting you will be able to develop your confidence and competence around your own collections work.
