In this section, we will consider what anti-racism can involve at an organisational level in museums. We will start by discussing institutional racism and its role in museums. An important step in building anti-racist practice is to recognise where and how structural racism plays out in our museums. We have to understand the problem.
We will then move on to consider how we can build accountability as museums, thinking about what we can put in place to start the work of dismantling racism in our organisations. Finally, we will discuss how to sustain this work in the long-term.
We recognise that learners will be in a range of museum roles, with different levels of seniority and influence in organisations. This section aims to raise awareness and understanding to support you in advocating for anti-racism whatever your role.
As with all the content in this module, the ideas set out here are for reflection and action. For long-term change, learners and organisations will need to commit to more in-depth anti-racism training, development and strategic planning.
By the end of this section you will:
- Have an improved understanding of institutional racism in museums
- Have a greater awareness of ways to build accountability for anti-racism in museums
- Be familiar with some of the key issues involved in sustaining this work in the long term
